At age 21 Suzanne married Charles Desmares, a Rouen pharmacist. The following year she had her first exhibits: one at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and another at the Société Normande de Peinture Moderne in Rouen. These early works reflected her training, showing characteristics of Impressionism, Intimism, Cubism, even Fauvism. In 1913, after only 18 months of marriage, Suzanne and Charles divorced. After serving as a nurse in the French army in World War I she started painting again and met the Swiss painter Jean Crotti whom she married in 1919. She joined the dada movement but painted in a number of styles. She had a successful and long career as a painter |
