Hamilton studied at the Royal Academy Schools. After the war, during which he was an engineering draughtsman in the army, he studied at the Slade School of Art and subsequently taught at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London and Durham University.
One of the most influential British 20th Century artists, he was a leading pioneer in the Pop-Art movement. His works comment on contemporary life, politics, literature and popular culture
