Illies studied at the Munich Academy. On his return to Hamburg where he was born, he soon made a name for himself as a painter of landscapes, city scenes, nudes and portraits. His graphic output included etching, lithography and woodcuts. Every major public collection in Germany includes numerous examples of his work.
