The influential art magazine PAN was edited by O.J.Bierbaum and Julius Meier-Graefe; (later issues were edited by Caesar Flaischlen and Richard Graul) and published between 1895 and 1900. In all there were 21 issues. It was the first German de-luxe art journal to be published with original graphics. The leading writers on art, music and literature contributed to it and the original prints, of an incredibly high standard, were by European and British artists breaking new ground in the Art Nouveau milieu. No expense was spared in the printing. Specially patterned tissue guards were bound in to protect the prints and fine paper was used throughout. Besides the original etchings, woodcuts and lithographs, many in colour, the books contained superb reproductions and facsimiles. The print runs were about 1,100 per issue. There was also a limited number of some of the issues published in French. All are scarce complete as over the years most copies have had the original prints removed.
