British, 1865 - 1945Scottish-born Cameron studied at the Glasgow School of Art. His earliest etchings date from 1884 and the strongest influence on his graphic work was Charles Meryon. He also admired the etchings of Whistler and Seymour Haden. His early etchings featured his home city, Glasgow and included the famous Clyde set, 20 views of the River Clyde. He visited France and Italy and made architectural study etchings of various Continental cities. On his return to Scotland he concentrated on capturing the spirit of Scottish rural landscapes. He also etched many scenes of ruins in landscapes. He produced over 500 etchings which enjoyed great popularity in the 1920s and 1930s and are now once again being avidly collected. |
