Gaul was born in Dusseldorf. During his Art History degree course at Cologne Universrity he taught himself to paint and in 1950 studied seriously under Willi Baumeister in Stuttgart. He then went to work in Paris, Antwerp and Rome and held many exhibitions and won various prizes
