British, 1882 - 1940 Sculptor, master of wood-engraving and woodcut printing and also a famous designer of type-faces. Gill was a fascinating character. He was a convert to Catholicism and was the head of a deeply religious commune of artists, designers and printers. Despite this he had a very bizarre view of sexual morality which shocked his contemporary society. He executed many outstanding public commissions (BBC building, Portland Place, London, Westminster Cathedral, Palais de la S D N, Geneva etc) His simplicity of line had a great influence on other artists of his time and his typeface designs are widely in use.
