British, 1898 - 1986 Born into a Yorkshire mining family, Henry Moore obtained a scholarship to Castleford Grammar School, where he received much encouragement from his art teacher. The first World War disrupted his plans to become a primary school teacher and in 1919 he gained a scholarship to Leeds School of Art. After studying there and at the London Royal College of Art, and trips to France and Italy, Moore taught sculpture at the Royal College. He fulfilled several public commissions and had exhibitions all over the world, including Leicester Galleries, New York Modern Art Museum and the State Galleries in Australia. Though best known for his sculpture, Moore made about 700 prints, including early wood engravings, the 'Promothée' illustrations of 1950 and several lithographs, many in colour |
