the title of this print is a word play on the pop song Putting on the Style by Lonnie Donegan of 1957 and the furniture made by the Dutch de Stijl design group; the chairs depicted were designed by the architect Gerrit Rietveld; Hamilton saw the chairs in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; the colours refer to those used by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian
